📍 Overview & History

  • Situated just 6–12 km from Nuwara Eliya town along the scenic Black pool Ambewela Pattipola Horton Plains Road and perched at around 1,900 m above sea level.

  • The artificial reservoir, completed in the late 1940s and inaugurated in 1950 by Prime Minister D.S. Senanayake, covers approximately 4.5 km² and stores around 2.17 million m³ primarily for local drinking water.

  • Canoe & rowboat rides: Motor boats are banned to preserve water quality. Boats are pedal or human powered great for eco-conscious travelers and photographers .

  • BBQ or picnic spots: The far side of the reservoir is perfect for small, private BBQs or picnics amidst misty hill views .

  • Adjacent to the reservoir, this forest reserve and educational park was developed by the Department of Forest Conservation to teach forest ecology, reforestation, soil protection, and traditional village life .

  • Features a 1–1.5 km circular nature trail with life-sized models and interpretive signage. Guided walks can help you spot native trees and learn conservation techniques .

  1. Best time to visit: Early mornings or late afternoons offer cooler temps, reduced mist, and mind-blowing light for photos .

  2. Pack warm layers: At nearly 1,900 m elevation, it can get chilly especially near dawn or dusk.

  4. Bring snacks: There are no shops by the reservoir bring a picnic or BBQ supplies.

  5. Combine nearby stops: On the route to Horton Plains, stop at Jagro’s Strawberry Café, Hag Gala Botanical Garden, or Gregory Lake .

“We stepped into the canoe at dawn, mist curling above the water. Under a canopy of emerald slopes, the silence was hypnotic. On the far shore, we could hear birdsong an osprey perhaps while steam rolled in from Haggala’s heights. The forest park trail rewarded us with towering trees and hand-painted village scenes. By breakfast, the sun lit the waters like liquid gold.”
